No longer seeking assignments, Simpson Kalisher has the freedom to explore the thousands upon thousands of images he created in his past wanderings. They have taught him about himself and about photography. He has selected over 100 images for possible inclusion in the new collection. For your interest, 16 are included here as the work in progress

Simpson Kalisher traveled North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa on a variety of assignments during the 40 plus years he was active as a free lance photographer. And while his commercial work earned him many awards, he sought a more personal truth in his work.

It was this search that prompted him to work independently to produce Railroad Men, photographs and collected stories, published in 1961 and, in 1976, his second book Propanganda and other Photographs.

This work in progress is a continued display of Kalisher's sense of humor, his use allegory and his penetrating social observations as he displayed in Propaganda and other Photographs.

Each book was unique in its own way. The stories in the railroad collection added mood and insight to the men photographed. But the second book had no such textual help nor did this book have a unifying theme. What might appear as a random selection was actually carefully sequenced, not by subject, but design. It was this visual continuity that made the book into a page turner. But when all is done the reader may discover the true unifying theme. It lies in a view of the world they inhabit.
